■The Feature “Needlework”
The 76 pages all make a feature of Japanese needlework, covering excellent Japanese needles that ensure exquisite but efficient needlework, kimonos requiring lots of needlework; sewing and unsewing until the completion, a kimono-making school in Kyoto that house and train their students for 5 years until they become superb needleworkers, etc.
■Globally acknowledged needles made in Hiroshima
In Japan, needles are all made in Hiroshima and have also gained global market share. Despite being mass-produced, they are also of excellent quality. Two professionals share their views on needle making, one is president of Bankoku Needle, a large needle manufacturer in Hiroshima and another is a lady who makes needles for embroidery by hand.
■Silk story
Silk used for Kimono, a symbol of Japanese culture, is nearly all produced abroad. Focusing on the project involved in the revitalization of the entire production process of silk in order to make genuine Japanese silk, we look in depth at the actual conditions of this project and where it is going.
■MUSASHIYA, a Japanese socks (tabi) manufacturer
The Japanese used to put on a pair of tabi socks when they wore kimonos as everyday attire, but nowadays probably only on a few occasions during their lifetime. Reflecting the trend, there used to be one or two tabi shops in every town but now only a dozen nationwide. We introduce Musashiya in Tokyo, that run their tabi socks business from the Taisho era.
■Thimbles made of silk
In Kanazawa, there are beautiful thimbles made from leftover pieces of silken thread from Kaga Yuzen. We went there to visit a lovely family who are passing the way of making silken thimbles on from generation to generation.
